The Gibraltar Ship Registry and Port have been placed on the list of Flags of Low Risk in the Paris Memorandum of Understanding, which is the international framework that establishes safety standards for Ports of Registry. This follows an audit carried out by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). This was undertaken between 24 and 29 January this year.
The scope of the audit included the flag, port and coastal State obligations of Gibraltar in relation to the mandatory IMO instruments that apply to Gibraltar. The IMO team audited not only the Port and the Gibraltar Maritime Administration but also all the other organisations which also play a role in helping to discharge Gibraltar’s international obligations.
Deputy Chief Minister, Joe Holliday said “The GMA and Port staff are to be congratulated on all the hard work they have put in to achieve this successful outcome. This will have a very positive effect on all the ships registered in Gibraltar and on Gibraltar Port generally. It will result in the Gibraltar flag being placed on the Low Risk Register on the Paris MOU and in the new Port State Control (PSC) regime. This will give credit to all the ships eligible to be considered as low risk and thus be less likely to be inspected by PSC Inspectors throughout the Paris MOU region.
Gibraltar is one of only 29 flags worldwide which qualify to be on this list and it is another indication of the high quality of the Gibraltar flag.”
